Olivier Messiaen Livre du Saint Sacrement
Last season at Ascension, Messiaen expert Jon Gillock played the other summit of Messiaen’s organ works, the Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité. The performance drew a deeply-moved capacity audience and critical acclaim. Gillock returns this March to play Messiaen’s final and single greatest masterpiece for organ, his Book of the Holy Sacrament. Whereas the Méditations is a work of vast scope, austere mysticism, and awe, the Livre comes from the very last years of Messiaen’s life when his compositional style became more simplified, direct, and even more profoundly spiritual. Quoting Gillock’s book on Messiaen, the Livre du Saint Sacrement "is, I believe, Messiaen’s most important work for organ: in its eighteen movements he explores a range of emotions, varieties of timbres, and a depth of expression that are unequaled in any of his other works."
Jon Gillock's extensive program notes for this very special event are now online.
