Salieri De Profundis
November 15, 2018, 7:30PM at The Church of the Ascension
Soloists: Addy Sterrett, Soprano; Pureum Jo, Soprano; Avery Amereau, Contralto; Mario Bahg, Tenor; Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Bass
Composed during the last days of his life, Mozart’s Requiem moves from tragic resignation in its opening to the fierce vigor of the “Dies Irae” and finally the intense pleading of the “Lacrimosa,” the movement left unfinished at his death.
Antonio Salieri, depicted in the movie Amadeus as Mozart’s nemesis, actually composed some extremely beautiful music, none more so than De Profundis. A simple, pure soprano chant gradually builds to a grandiose conclusion with full orchestra and chorus.
Virtually unknown, Joseph Martin Kraus’s Requiem provides a striking contrast to Mozart’s—lighter but equally haunting. The German Kraus later worked in Sweden, becoming known as the Swedish Mozart.

Great Choral Music by Women Composers
March 20, 2019, 7:30PM at The Brick Church (1140 Park Avenue)
A program of considerable musical richness traces the path of composers from the medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen to nineteenth century prodigies Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel; the early twentieth century Americans Amy Beach and Florence Price; and Lili Boulanger, a student of Gabriel Fauré; culminating in works by composers of the last 40 years. The world premiere of a work by Korean-American Bora Yoon commissioned by VoA will be a highlight of the concert.
Works of Lassus and Byrd
May 1, 2019, 7:30PM at The Church of the Ascension
The extraordinary human artistic flowering known as the Renaissance gave us what is often referred to as “The Golden Age of Choral Music,” when all the greatest composers of the world were writing for chorus. At the very end of this period two figures towered over them all: Lassus and Byrd. Several iconic works will be performed, including Lassus’s Justorum animae and Surrexit Pastor Bonus, and Ave Verum Corpus and Four-Part Mass by Byrd.
